There is a beautiful forest close to Münsterhof in the Lauenburg district. The path leading through it has high hills on both sides, and a black man without a head resides in this depressed road.

One evening, around ten o’clock, a farmer from Reckow had to pass through this road. His cart was heavily loaded with flour, and thus he only progressed slowly. After he had advanced a short distance along the road, a sack of flour suddenly fell off the wagon. The farmer suspected what might be to blame for this, and thus calmly drove onwards. Not long after that, another sack fell to the ground. That, too, didn’t bother him, and only after each and every one of the sacks suddenly rolled off the wagon did he stop, climb down, and load everything up again.

But his misfortune was not finished yet. For, as soon as he had driven the horses onwards again, not only the sacks but also the planks and ladders fell off the wagon and were thrown into the sand. This was too much for the farmer, and in his anger he started to swear profusely. As he was saying those curse words, everything that had been scattered was suddenly gathered on the wagon again. The ladders, the sacks, the planks — nothing was missing, and the black, headless man stood next to him and looked him piercingly in the face.

But the farmer took care not to say a single word to the headless man, and instead drove onwards in silence. He then reached his farm in Reckow without further disturbance.
