When the Swedes ravaged the land and their army was at Bengel, the nose and ears of one Swedish soldier were cut off at the mill of Scheidweiler after he had behaved in an extremely inappropriate manner. After this man arrived in their camp in this state, all soldiers called for revenge and immediately ventured forth in order to teach the people of Scheidweiler a lesson for their excessive orneriness.

Fortunately for the latter, there was a man among them who “knew more than how to eat bread”, as they say. This man quickly began to cut branches, and then there were as many well-armed men standing there as he had cut branches. When the approaching enemy saw this imposing force which outnumbered them by far, they had no choice other than to retreat and congratulate themselves that they had escaped with their skins intact.
