There once was a woman near Osterwieck who was very miserly. She had a maid who was very compassionate. That maid gave the poor local women much of the wealth of her mistress, and handed them money through the gutter hole. For this, she received all those thanks of “May God reward you!” which ought to have been directed at the woman owning the wealth.
Thus, three days after her death, the miserly woman sat on her old chair behind the oven where she always used to sit, went into the pantry, into the cellar, to the animals in the stable, and rattled mightily with the crockery. Her son finally sent for a few Jesuits who had to ask her for her desires. Then she said that she wanted nothing more than the God’s rewards that the maid had received for what she had handed through the gutter hole. The girl was questioned and answered: She should receive them all in God’s name. The woman then said that she should shake her hand on this. The Jesuits did not permit this, and instead she had to hold a broomstick towards her. And as she did so, the broomstick splintered into a thousand pieces.
The woman then said: She now could reach grace, if her son butchered a pig, baked cakes from three bushels of wheat flour, and then distributed everything to the poor. This was done, and after that she was transported to the Kibitzbruch swamp in a coach with four horses. She was not seen again.
