A child's coffin.
A child's coffin.

(Oral tale, from German Bohemia.)

The youngest child of a burgher woman had died. This child had been the apple of her eye, and she did not know what else she could do to show her love for him and do good things for him before he was put beneath the ground and she would never see him again. And when she cleaned him and clothed him when he was laid out in the coffin, she thought that the small shoes were not good enough. Thus, she took the whitest flour that she had, made a dough, and baked shoes made out of bread for the child.

The child was buried while wearing these shoes. However, he left his mother neither rest nor peace, but appeared before her in a pitiful countenance. This lasted until his coffin was dug up again, the little shoes made out of bread were pulled off his feet, and other, decent shoes were put on instead. Since that time, he has remained quiet.
