Doctor Faust once had the Nitz in his service. With him, he traveled over the ocean along the coasts within a box made out of glass in order to observe all depths and shallows. He noted everything he saw through his glass box down on paper for the nautical charts, and the charts which the captains and helmsmen use and on which everything is mapped out originated with him. When they reached the ferry point close to the entrance of Flensburg Harbor, they got too close so that the glass box was in danger of sinking. Then Doctor Faust shouted: “Hol Nitz!” (“Halt, Nitz!”) For the Nitz was not supposed to move the glass box further, as there was no path ahead, and bring the ship to a halt. Since that time, this place is called Holnitzfähr (“ferry point of Holnitz”).
