Once, a forester from Dürlinsdorf named Farin went into the Stöcketen forest between one and two o’clock in the morning in order to wait for game. Then he suddenly perceived beautiful music. And where a dark forest had stood the day before, a mighty palace with shining battlements rose up just before him. Astonished, he approached the palace. It was brightly lit, and a great mass of people moved within its rooms.

Then three men stepped before him. One of them, who was dressed in green and wore a green hat, handed him a book with the command to write his name inside of it, for entrance to the palace was only allowed under this condition. Farin did not contemplate for long, but put the book on a table and started to write. But instead of his name, he wrote the words: “May Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews, protect me from sudden death!”

As soon as he had written the last word, the palace with all the people and lights had vanished, and the forest once more stood at its former position. The book was lying on a tree stump in the thickets, and Farin took it home with him. When he browsed it, he saw many names written within it. Several of them were well known to him.
